Allowing public like and comment?

Fellow Hubzillans, I'm considering changing the permissions on my channel to allow likes and comments from people that I am not connected to. I'm assuming that means changing my "Channel Role and Privacy" setting from "Social - Mostly Public" to "Social - Federation".

According to the Hubzilla documentation, "Social - Federation" also means that my list of connections is public and that non-connections can DM me. I don't want those things.

Is it possible to get the desired combo (public like and comment, not public connection list and DM)? If so, how?

Hmmm... (scratching head): I would probably create permission groups and assign the individual channels to these groups, depending what you want to allow/disallow. To do that, your channel privacy settings probably wouldn't have to be changed at all. My channel is set as "mostly public" and it appears to work well for me. But (more scratching) I'm not a 100% sure.

You could set your channel to Custom / Expert mode, I guess, which lets you choose a lot more individually who gets to do what. I've only played around with it a little, though.

I also did activate the "federation" toggle which makes my public posts to appear even on hubs where my channel doesn't have any connections - but another channel on my hub. That means that all public posts from my hub will federate to all hubs where at least one channel has a connection. And that goes all across public streams all across the federated platforms. I don't use it much though (I deactivated the "default" but kept the "allow" switch on)... privacy is only a powerful concept if you keep it...

But it's good if you want to get a message out to the masses...

Ouch, @craggers , that’s quite a harsh judgment of my motivation. Consider for a moment that I might be trying to compare the culture and behavior of different platforms by trying different combinations of permissions to see how/if they influence user interaction.

@Tanja , no, I’m not at all sure. And it would likely not be permanent because I don’t want to build and maintain relationships with lurkers and armchair critics.

But I have noticed the greater user interaction on Diaspora and Mastodon, and wondered if that is because of their default permissions (public like and comment). It could be because of the sheer volume of native users but, given that Hubzilla and Friendica federate with both, I would have thought to see more cross-platform interaction than I do.

if you change your profile to custom/expert mode you can set public likes/comments and hide your contacts.

You can install Permissions Categories app and in the Settings, Channel Settings, Security and Privacy Settings you will have a new option Default permissions category and you can set all new followers as follower.

Keep your permissions as 'Social - mostly public'.

This should be 128. Change it to 256 and submit.

note1: If you ever change your channel permission role to anything else, you may lose this change.

note2: You won't receive comments from any 'pending' (unapproved) connections until they are approved. If you want to allow these people to comment, use 512 instead of 256.

note3: if the starting value was anything besides 128, stop. Leave it alone.
